A Joint Venture of Open Source Proportions! Open Productivity is Here

Six open source vendors — Collabora Productivity, Element, Nordeck, Open-Xchange, Univention and XWiki — have formed a Berlin-registered company, Open Productivity Software GmbH, to bring the openDesk office and collaboration suite to critical infrastructure operators and businesses internationally. Dr. Gerald Pfeifer, formerly of SUSE, and Peter Ganten, chief executive of Univention, are the managing directors. Each founder contributes a component: Collabora supplies document editing, Element provides Matrix-based communications, Nordeck adds Jitsi and its NeoBoard whiteboard, Open-Xchange covers email and calendars, Univention handles identity and access management, and XWiki contributes the wiki. Nextcloud and OpenProject are part of openDesk but not founders, and launch partners include Adfinis, the msg group and Smile. The company names Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace as its competition and pitches openDesk as a sovereign alternative giving customers full control of their data; openDesk originated with Germany's government-backed ZenDiS, whose managing director Pamela Krosta-Hartl welcomed the initiative.
