The Eclipse Foundation announced the formation of the Sovereign AI Foundation, a vendor-neutral initiative to help member organisations understand their AI dependencies, evaluate open source alternatives, and retain meaningful choice and control over critical AI systems. The effort launches with 17 participating organisations, including Red Hat, Ericsson, Bosch, Thales, Renesas, and Infosys, and will connect members with independently governed Eclipse projects such as Theia and Theia AI, Enclave, PanEval, and LMOS, as well as the Open VSX Registry. The foundation says the initiative will focus on knowledge sharing, technology assessment, project evaluation, ecosystem coordination, and practical guidance rather than developing software or specifications itself, and that projects keep control of their own technical roadmaps while it explores a broader registry for emerging components such as MCP servers, agent skills, and plugins.
