Eclipse INCEpTION, a browser-based platform for interactive and automated annotation of text and multi-modal content, was proposed as an Eclipse Foundation project. The proposal says development was funded by a German Research Foundation (DFG) grant, that research money is readily available for building new tools but rarely for maintaining existing ones, and that as grant funding tapered the project’s principal maintainer, Richard Eckart de Castilho, kept it going through freelance consulting contracts. With the UKP Lab at TU Darmstadt now planning to wind down its involvement, the proposal says the project needs a durable institutional home for the Maven repository, demo server and codebase, arguing a vendor-neutral foundation provides governance that does not depend on one research institution and can act as the open source steward for the codebase under the EU Cyber Resilience Act, without which it doubts the maintainer and occasional contributors could continue as they do today.
