Google announced it is donating gVisor, the Apache-2.0 container sandbox runtime it open-sourced in 2018, including its name and trademarks, to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which accepted the application on 2026-09-28. The project expects to reach CNCF Sandbox status in the coming weeks and to work toward Incubation, moving its build and test infrastructure to GitHub Actions and Buildkite, adding non-Google maintainers with merge rights, and eventually adopting organization-based voting so Google cannot hold unilateral control of governance; Ant Group, Modal and Tines have committed to long-term maintainership. The maintainers said the move should help gVisor overcome adoption and performance-perception challenges, citing Linux kernel patches they tried to upstream that kernel maintainers turned down because the project was wholly owned by Google.
