Linux Foundation Launches BUILD Foundation to Sustain Large-Scale, Multi-Language Build and Test Systems

At BazelCon in Amsterdam on 14 October 2026, the Linux Foundation announced the operational launch of the BUILD Foundation, a neutral home for the Bazel build and test ecosystem, with initial members ASML, Canva, Datadog, EngFlow, Figma and Spotify. Bazel, open sourced by Google in 2015, is now used at scale by thousands of companies across automotive, enterprise software and finance, and the new foundation is meant to formalize coordinated industry investment in maintainers, community rulesets, tooling and infrastructure that no single organisation can sustain alone. Initial investments target the top challenges from the 2025 Bazel User Survey: staffing dedicated technical writing for documentation, funding maintainers for bazel-contrib repositories, launching training and certification programs, improving IDE integration, and strengthening supply chain security through release attestations in the Bazel Central Registry. 'The BUILD Foundation provides a neutral home where organizations can invest together in its maintainers, security and long-term sustainability,' said Linux Foundation CEO Jim Zemlin. Membership is open at buildfoundation.dev.
