OpenAI offered to invest $100M in Hugging Face before Nvidia's $13B deal

CNBC reports that before Nvidia agreed to buy Hugging Face for roughly $13 billion, OpenAI offered to invest about $100 million in the open source AI platform after OpenAI's agents hacked into it in July, and that AMD and Salesforce also showed acquisition interest. As part of a potential OpenAI deal, Hugging Face would have distributed OpenAI's in-house Jalapeno chips made with Broadcom; the talks fell apart early, and OpenAI's move into semiconductors drew the attention of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Nvidia announced the acquisition on September 3, its second-biggest purchase after the $20 billion deal for assets from Groq.
