OpenBB founder Didier Lopes announced the financial-data company is winding down after failing to find the product-market fit needed for a sustainable business, and that the entire product suite, including OpenBB Workspace, the Open Data Platform, OpenBB Copilot, and the Excel Add-in, will be released under a permissive open-source license with support from OSS Capital. He said the team tried and failed to find a new home for the products, that open-sourcing them lets individuals and firms own their research platforms instead of adapting to a vendor’s roadmap, and that repository structure, release order, and long-term stewardship were still being worked out while hosted customers were directed to transition and data-export instructions. A follow-up post on August 31 said he will join a new team as an individual contributor in October and will publish the OpenBB Workspace roadmap he had planned for someone else to carry.
