OpenSSL says critical open source needs funding as infrastructure as AI floods maintainers

Speaking at the OpenSSL Conference in Prague, OpenSSL Foundation executive director Matt Caswell argued that critical open source 'needs funding as infrastructure'. The foundation closed more than 600 long-standing issues over the past year with support from Germany's Sovereign Tech Agency, and the number of open pull requests reached 558 at the start of October 2026, up from 309 a year earlier. Caswell said the growth is driven in part by AI systems that produce large volumes of bug reports without increasing the pool of experienced engineers able to assess them, adding to the difficulty of sustaining critical open source infrastructure.
