Pop!_OS bans AI-generated code from much of its codebase

Neowin reports that System76 has banned AI-generated contributions across many of its COSMIC and Pop!_OS codebases, requiring contributors to confirm that pull requests contain no LLM-generated code, comments or descriptions, with the same requirement added to the Pop repository's contribution guidelines. Principal engineer Jeremy Soller said the volume of incoming submissions was overwhelming maintainers, many of them from people showing little understanding of the software's architecture, and System76 said AI-generated contributions can add unnecessary complexity and take substantially longer to review. The cosmic-flatpak repository is exempt because reviewers there mainly verify sandbox permissions instead of maintaining the upstream applications themselves, and the article presents the change as an expansion of the pull request template update COSMIC made in early October.
