Simutrans maintainer Roboron said he is stepping down as maintainer of the game’s Steam and other platform releases and as manager of its social media accounts because the project has begun using generative AI, in the announcement for Simutrans 125. He wrote that the project now includes AI-generated content and that an AI disclosure had been added to its Steam store page, and said he considers current generative AI fundamentally unethical, citing training on creators’ work without consent or compensation, water and energy use and its impact on communities near data centers, and what he described as an AI-driven financial bubble that is also driving up PC component prices. He added that the team may well use the technology to speed up development but that he no longer wants to take part. The Steam store listing says generative AI has been used for coding and programming assistance, translating text files, and creating some assets in certain paksets.
