The maintainer of Spliit, an open source expense-splitting app, moved the project’s funding from GitHub Sponsors and a direct Stripe link to Open Collective, hosted by the non-profit Open Source Collective, so that every donation and expense is public and the money no longer passes through his personal account. The post says the roughly $150 a month raised covers only hosting, the database and other running costs and is not used to pay the maintainer or the project’s 91 contributors, and frames the change as a way for the project to survive him if he ever steps away.
