ThingsBoard says its Apache-2.0 Community Edition and closed Professional Edition will merge into one source-available product under the Business Source License 1.1 starting with version 4.4, with each release converting to Apache 2.0 four years after it ships. The company names AI coding assistants as the reason for the change, arguing that when open code and AI are this powerful together the right move is to open more of ThingsBoard rather than less, and it keeps the last Community Edition LTS on Apache 2.0 with security updates until July 20, 2027. A Free License covers commercial use up to 100 devices on one server and non-commercial use up to 1,000 devices on any number of servers, a Commercial License is needed beyond that or to remove branding, and a Community Grant Program protects existing CE deployments.
